60 women gathered for International Women’s Day

Zonta Club London II hosted a breakfast for 60  women to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8th. There were 4 speakers: Zlatina Loudjeva from PwC (co-sponsors); Rhian Sherrington, founder of Women in Sustainability; Jos Dirkx, founder of Girls & Football SA; and Charmian Love, an Oxford University lecturer and co-founder of B Lab UK.
Themes discussed included the importance of investing in women to business success and the well-being of society – women should not have to choose between work and child-rearing; the necessity of good role models for boys and girls; coping with adversity; engaging men in the right conversation about balance, gender equality and sustainability – that starts at home and continues in school. In the current climate we should recognize that there is feminine and masculine in all of us and it should not become toxic for either sex. Everyone was given a yellow Zonta rose!

September 2011 Meeting

Please join us for our next meeting after the Summer break.

Zonta London are  delighed to invite you to September’s meeting with our guest speaker Julia Lalla-Maharajh.  She will talking about her journey to Davos and the challenges and success of building the Orchid Project.

The Orchid Project was founded in June 2010.  Julia Lalla-Maharajh, its founder, was volunteering in Ethiopia when she came across the scale and extent of female genital cutting there. She was determined to do something about this.

Following this, she entered the YouTube/World Economic Forum competition, the Davos Debates. This called for one human rights activist to film a 3 minute video to highlight their urgent cause. The competition was judged by Ariana Huffington, Paulo Coelho and Muhammad Yunus and she was shortlisted. In a global vote, she won and went to Davos, to hold a debate with the head of UNICEF, Amnesty International and the UN Foundation. This was facilitated by Nick Kristof, award winning Pulitzer Prize winner and co-author of Half the Sky.

She set up the Orchid Project to address the need for dedicated advocacy to address FGC. She works on the Orchid Project with a number of others. What unites them is their passionate belief in empowering communities to work to change this practice and seeing this happen within the next generation.
